In our fast-paced online world, it is critical for a company’s website to attract the maximum possible traffic. And of course, the traffic flow to your website can greatly increase if a search engine lists your site in the top few search results. This improvement in the volume of traffic routed to a website using search engines is given the term ‘search engine optimization (SEO).’
Obviously, a higher flow of visitors results in higher revenues for a business. So much so, that some search engines operate premium services that ensure indexing for a site in their database. However, such programs usually do not guarantee specific ranking within the results. Thus, SEO can work akin to a ‘yellow pages’ service for a business’s customers. Hence, it makes sense to invest some money and some effort towards SEO. Also, a qualitative study of the traffic can be done by measuring the visitors’ activities on the site. For example, a visitor who searches for a site, and makes a purchase is definitely worth more than one who just browses and leaves. Other ‘trackable’ activities might include subscribing to newsletters, downloading documents etc.
However, the caveat is that SEO can be used to misdirect visitors to hoaxes, or to sites that may not even have anything to do with the search string. Still, the benefits of SEO are there for all to see.
In effect, SEO combines the knowledge of search algorithm functionality with what people search for to help provide relevant search results to visitors. SEO involves making a site’s code more robust, and also some changes to the overall structure, and presentation. However, most of the changes are made in the back-end, and go largely unnoticed by visitors.
SEO also dictates a need to include unique content on pages, so that search engines can easily index them. Also, fresh content would improve the visual appeal of a site to visitors. Moreover, it is logical to perform SEO in the initial design stage of a site, so that all the elements and structures can be made visually appealing as well as ‘search-friendly.’
All in all, it goes to say, that SEO can be a powerful marketing tool for any business. In fact, for a business to have that extra cutting edge, SEO is not just important, it is vital.
