In today’s fast paced, knowledge-driven world, search engines are becoming more and more popular. These search engines enable people to find required information quickly on the web. Thus, most webmasters submit their website to search engines and optimize their websites to have a better placement on a search engine. Although, major search engines like Google, Yahoo and MSN have tools and programs that find all websites on the internet by themselves, webmasters submit web pages to search engines, to enable the site to appear on the first page of the search. The higher a page is ranked on a search engine, the more likely for it to be visited.
There are two basic methods of submitting a website to a search engine. One method is to submit one page at a time. The other method is to submit the entire website at one time, with a sitemap. However, for a well designed website one need not bother with submission of all the web pages.The submission of the home page may be sufficient,as the search engine crawler will find the rest of the website. The most effective way of making a website visible on the search engine is to have one’s website cited in other webpages, which is known as backward linking. If the content in one’s website supplements the information in another, then the other website will link your’s to it, without any charge. The submission of one’s website on an online directory like Yahoo can also make it easliy accessible to people. Exchange of links among webistes or buying of links on another website are other ways to do so.
